Southpaw Packing wins Mental Health Awareness Award

Southpaw Packing Co., an AAMP Processor Member located in Windham, ME, has won a C.A.L.ME Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness Maine. The Caring About Lives in Maine Awards are presented to individuals, groups, or organizations in recognition of heroic accomplishments that support suicide prevention. Southpaw Packing won the award for its “Slicing through the Stigma” campaign, which raises awareness for mental health support in the agriculture industry.

The award was presented at NAMI Maine’s “Beyond the Basics Suicide Prevention” Conference, held on April 11, 2024, in Freeport, ME. Stigma prevents people from speaking up and getting support. As a meat processor, Southpaw Packing Company recognizes the barriers those in the agricultural industry, and beyond, face when it comes to mental health support.

“We are profoundly thankful for this surprising accolade,” said Nichole Sargent, co-owner & operator of Southpaw Packing. “The C.A.L.ME Award symbolizes the culmination of our arduous efforts to raise mental health awareness in the agricultural & meat processing communities. It is a privilege to be part of a movement that aims to create a supportive environment for those who need it most. We will continue to drive this conversation forward with unwavering commitment and passion.”
